All we know so far is that Earth-X is home to some Nazi-flavored versions of characters like Green Arrow, Supergirl, Reverse-Flash and Prometheus, and even that reveal was dragged out till the last possible minute. However, I'm making a point of watching and reviewing each chapter of the crossover in turn rather than binging the whole thing and then trying to keep track of what happened where. It's a real thrill seeing so many heroes unleashing their powers on screen at once, with Flash catching bullets by the dozens while Green Arrow, Firestorm, Killer Frost and Vibe make mincemeat of Nazis.
Crisis On Earth-X - But even that was just the tip of the iceberg no pun intended. Revealing the basic premise behind Earth-X isn't really the most memorable way of capping off the first quarter of the crossover.
Plot-wise, this crossover isn't much to write home about yet. It doesn't feel as though we learned anything at all about the brewing conflict between heroes and Nazi doppelgangers that wasn't already apparent from the trailers and promotional materials. All we know so far is that Earth-X is home to some Nazi-flavored versions of characters like Green Arrow, Supergirl, Reverse-Flash and Prometheus, and even that reveal was dragged out till the last possible minute. Revealing the basic premise behind Earth-X isn't really the most memorable way of capping off the first quarter of the crossover. It was all the more frustrating because it forced the Nazi versions of these characters to wear masks and disguise their voices for most of the episode, which really limited the intimidation factor. I do wonder if this problem will be lessened for a lot of people watching these episodes live and back-to-back. However, I'm making a point of watching and reviewing each chapter of the crossover in turn rather than binging the whole thing and then trying to keep track of what happened where. Barry and Iris getting married is a big deal, and it's nice to see the writers taking the time to give this development the room it deserves to breathe. And really, so much of the appeal with these shows is the way each group feels less like a superhero team than a goofy, dysfunctional. This episode was crammed with great little character moments. Mick alone was a nonstop source of amusement all throughout. Between the bathrobe incident and his run-in with Captain Singh, there was never a dull moment watching Mick trying to interact with everyone else in a normal setting. Best of all was the interplay between Mick and Caitlin. Even better is the fact that Mick seems to have a thing for Caitlin's Killer Frost side. I like the idea of those two potentially becoming partners in crime over the course of the crossover. But even that was just the tip of the iceberg no pun intended. This episode never failed to take advantage of the powder keg that comes with cramming so many dysfunctional heroes with shared histories into the same room. I also enjoyed the awkward hookup between Alex and Sara. It's a perfect little pairing that reminds us how much untapped potential there is yet when it comes to uniting the heroes of Earth-38 with those of Earth-1. As it is, I'm disappointed that Winn and J'onn seem to be sitting this one out again and James has so far only appeared in Earth-X Guardian form before being brutally killed. Not to mention that we'll never have the ultimate Arrowverse crossover without Superman joining the fray. Still, at least the writers are making the most of Alex as Kara's +1. One thing that struck me about this episode is that it didn't really feel weighted towards any one show or group of characters. This feels like a much more fluid and natural approach. There's plenty of banter and character drama from all directions, and it all culminated nicely as it became clear that Barry and Iris were practically the only people at the wedding not feeling miserable. That's a nice change of pace for Barry. Slow start or not, you can't complain about that massive action sequence in the church. It's a real thrill seeing so many heroes unleashing their powers on screen at once, with Flash catching bullets by the dozens while Green Arrow, Firestorm, Killer Frost and Vibe make mincemeat of Nazis. Overgirl fight also impressed, even with the aforementioned annoyance with Overgirl's pointless mask disguise. Does Kara really not recognize her own powers in action? Finally, I should mention that this episode also captured the emotional heft of Barry and Iris' big moment right up to the point where it was predictably ruined. Joe's toast made for an especially heartwarming moment. Heartwarming moments are just something Jesse L. The Verdict This year's Arrowverse crossover is a full episode larger in scope than the last, and it's clear the writers don't feel pressured to fill that time with nonstop action and plot. It did, however, make the most of this massive pairing of heroes, delivering an endless stream of banter and character drama before transitioning into an epic battle royale. There are certainly worse ways to kick off a crossover.
